Around 1820, artist John James Audubon decided to paint every bird found in North America. He completed his impressive Birds of America collection of paintings in 1838, and it is now considered the archetype of wildlife illustration.
Fewer than 200 copies of this famous work remain, one of which is on permanent display in the Huntington Library.
