This strikingΒ 100% wool scarf is made using theΒ shibori dyeing technique.
The word shibori means βto wring, squeeze, and press,β referring to the traditional, manual Japanese dyeing technique. This technique produces multitone patterns on fabric and is similar to yet more intricate than tie-dyeing.
The earliest example of shibori-dyed fabric in Japan is from the eighth century, found among the goods donated by Emperor ShΕmu to the TΕdai-ji temple in Nara.
Each scarf is individually dyed by hand, so no two scarves are exactly alike.
